Preschool Artist Class

Early childhood is an important time for children to be exposed to art media, techniques and processes. Art courses help develop children's cognitive, affective and sensorimotor domains. At Big Picture, pre-school art courses are have four main goals: introduce the children to art media, establish simple routines for best practice, build a foundation of basic art vocabulary and knowledge, and work cooperatively and collaboratively with the teacher and classmates.

  • The session will include a variety of media techniques and processes such as:

    • acrylic painting, watercolor painting, drawing with various media,
      ceramic sculpture, collage, printmaking, mixed media
      and work with recycled and found objects.

Beginning Artist Class

This is a general art studio designed for Kindergarten through 2nd grade students.
In Beginning Artist Class, students will explore:

  • The Elements of Art

  • The Principles of Design

  • Art Vocabulary and Concepts.

  • The first week of each session will be working with ceramics.

  • The rest of the session will include a variety of media techniques and processes such as:

    • acrylic painting, watercolor painting, drawing with various media,
      ceramic sculpture, collage, mixed media, and work with recycled and found objects.

Intermediate Artist Class

This is a general art studio designed for 3rd through 5th grade students.
In Intermediate Artist Studio, students will:

  • Build on previously established art skills and knowledge

  • Continue working with The Elements of Art and Principles of Design

  • Develop individual style and creative and artistic practice

  • The first week of each session will be working with ceramics.

  • Media and processes covered in this course can include:

    • acrylic painting, watercolor painting, drawing with various media, ceramic sculpture, collage, printmaking, mixed media and work with recycled and found objects.

Guided Artist Open Studio

This course is designed for 3rd through 8th grades.
In intermediate Guided Open Studio, students will:

  • Build on previously established skills and knowledge

  • Select their own media and subject matter to work with

  • Receive individualized guidance from the teachers

  • Develop individual artistic style

  • Cultivate “Big Picture” thinking and problem solving skills

Experienced Artist Open Studio

This is a general art studio course designed for students in 6th grade through high school. In Experienced Artist Open Studio, students will be continuing their artistic practice and creative development, but also assuming more autonomy in directing their course of study. Students in Advanced Artist Studio can focus on Painting, Ceramics or work in a variety of media and processes. If particular themes are beginning to emerge in a student’s work they can explore and develop these themes in Advanced Artist Studio.
*This is a 90 minute course
